Oh dirty river [26 Sep 2005|06:50pm]
Hi. I'm home now, got back Thursday night and have been busy since. I gave up on posting updates after we left Munster since internet time tended to run about $0.50/minute and I'm a very slow writer. I'll try and post a summary sometime soon, but knowing me that probably won't happen, so if you actually want to hear about the trip, it might be best to just ask.

It is good to be home.

Slept for like 14 hours last night, so I'm finally caught up. Jetlag wasn't so much the issue, it's not like I have a regular sleep schedule to begin with, but I hadn't had a decent night's rest since Sunday. Much better now.

Eva tells us that Münster won an award for being the most livable city of its size in the world, and that doesn't seem unjust. The entirety of downtown is given over to pedestrians and bicyclists, with only a couple of arteries for taxis (which I assume are for tourists, since seriously everyone rides bikes). There are parks and trees everywhere. There are ice cream shops and tea houses laid out between the centuries-old cathedrals. I guess it's hard to explain and I'm doing a piss job of it.

Eva is a total sweetheart who is going way out of her way to make sure we are enjoying ourselves. I think we'll have to buy her something nice.

Remember what I said about beer? Well forget it, because every other type of drinkable liquid is even more expensive. A litre of Coke would be about $10.00. I've decided to start getting used to being slightly dehydrated.

Blahh. I keep typing sentences and deleting them because they're terribly dull. Not much of note has happened in the ten hours of wakefulness that have transpired since my last entry. Maybe I should try and keep you posted slightly less.

Cheers,
Bobby

P.S. Emmi's LJ name is daemonboardroom for those of you who may be interested in following her somewhat less inane ramblings.

Münster [04 Sep 2005|03:15pm]
Yesterday took the rail from Frankfurt to Münster, my first time on a train. Very novel, and about a million times better than an airplane, not least because there are smoking cars. The German countryside looks almost exactly like western Washington, but with castles. The architecture in general is quite different, but similar enough that it's a bit eerie.

Münster is very much like Eugene in many ways, i.e. it's a college town with a very young population, huge on bicycling, etc. Last evening happened to be the one time a year where all the museums in downtown are free, so that was quite pleasant, we went and saw some Picasso prints and had some great Italian-style pizza.

Today we're on a day trip to Elte, a very lovely little town, visiting the parents of our hostess Eva. We took a walk around the countryside, I learned what an Oak tree looked like, and Emmi picked a bouquet of wildflowers. As she said, it was rather like walking through a Flemish painting.

Having a grand time and wishing you were all here,
Bobby

Welkommen! [04 Sep 2005|03:06am]
Made it to Frankfurt. All the urinals here are explicitly designed to force the urinator to void on himself as often as possible. Fuck splash. Also, Beer ist das FUCKING EXPENSIVE.

Tomorrow, Munster. Will be there for a while. Peace out my one collective homeslice.

Emmi's pig.

Apparently, she's a bad listener.

I would say that that is the least of the issues this brings to light.

Leaving on a something something. [18 Mar 2004|03:40am]
This term has been from Hell academically. The last week has been a wholly appropriate finale. Apparently I was one of the bad guys from the Bible in a past life. It is very, very relieving to be basically done, and I think I'm pulling some pretty good grades out of it too. Really, though, what I learned from these classes was coping skills.

Apologies to all whom I've neglected this term. I'll try to make up for it soon.

In a couple hours I'm boarding a plane from PDX to Oakland, then taking the BART from Oakland to SFO, then another plane from there to Atlanta, and finally from Atlanta on to sunny and beautiful Santiago, Chile for a week's vacation. The next day and a half are going to be a nightmare, but it's really nice to have something to look forward to.

Let me know what you want me to bring back for you.

Cheers,
Bobby

In the garbage can on the main floor of my apartment building, there is a half-finished Rubix Cube, broken in two. I don't need to tell you that this is awesome.

plant. [01 Feb 2004|05:43am]
Ok, I'm pretty sure the winner of the houseplant contest is reluctance with "Chuck the Plant". Because the true way to this man*'s heart is through video game references. In a very close second was qousqous with "Asphalt vagina overload ginko", because the other way to this man*'s heart is through inspired and toneful absurdity. My thanks to all who played.

In response to mightymonju's query as to what kind of plant it is, hopefully it's the kind of plant that doesn't die easily.

God help us all if I ever reproduce.

*This word used with all appropriate irony.

I am a superhero. [05 Nov 2003|06:16pm]
[ mood | irradiated ]

Who just learned five weeks of linear algebra in six hours? Who just nailed his midterm to the wall1?

Oh right, that was me. Me the superhero.

I'm quite confident that I can now harness the mighty sun as an efficient, renewable energy source, and also move mountains with the power of my mind. My whites stay sparkling and my colors stay crisp and bright, even after repeated washings. I can run faster than ten speeding bullets. I rule.

I'm gonna go find some wind, maybe toss a bunch of sheets at it.

1Yes, I am a total slacker, BUT STILL!

qousqous (17:13:17): muddle FUCK. [23 Oct 2003|05:07pm]
[ mood | #%%^$#*&^%*&~ ]

Jesus god. I'm well acquainted with insomnia, we go way back, but seriously - it's never been this bad before. My vision is starting to get distorted, like I'm seeing everything from the inside of a fishbowl, and I keep seeing fucked-up black things moving at the corner of my eye. I remember when I used to hang out with those meth heads, they'd call those "crank monsters". It's disturbing as fuck.

My brain is not working, I just tried to get dinner at the cafeteria and I ended up standing there confused for ten minutes, and then I panicked and left. I feel like someone's stuffed my head with old gym socks and then beat it around a bit. I just want some fucking rest.

Yeah, still poopy. A fascinating lecture on economic disaster from Dr. Qous (qousqous) cheered me up tremendously, though. Seriously.

"We'll do that someday. We'll go hunt boars in the winter." [16 Oct 2003|04:53am]
Yesterday, some freakishly cool human put a torrent of Tampopo up at Suprnova. I, of course, downloaded the hell out of it (and, comfortingly enough1, many other humans did as well).

Now, if you haven't seen this movie, I don't really know what to say to you. It is, truly and sincerely, one of the best films I have ever seen. The "hunting boars in winter" scene alone is worth any admission price. I can show it to you, if you have a human soul.

Anyway, it is impossible to watch this movie without desperately craving some ramen. So, midway through our screening tonight, Tom and I made the best noodles I have ever eaten. Completely improvised, by two total non-cooks. But it was a revelation.

I no longer just want to be able to cook food which I can subside on. I want to cook good food. Really good food.

Who can help me?

1It makes me feel better about the world when other humans enjoy things that I consider good.

NO THANKS TO TOM [15 Oct 2003|02:20am]
[ mood | fizzy ]

Jenny tells me I need to post more to be cool enough for her friends list. Look at me, I'm posting! Look, yeah!

What I'm drinking now is a mix of vodka, Sprite, orange juice, and Diet Rite cola. This is what happens when you don't notice you're almost out of mixers before you start pouring. To think...a mere two days ago, I was imbibing the succulent fruit borne of the unstoppable drink-mixing tag-team that is Seamus and Matthew. They actually convinced me that I like gin! I hold my nose as I finish my drink, and shed a single manly tear.

I was gonna go to class today, but I slept through it instead, and then I was gonna do homework, but I was tired instead, and so I got depressed about those things and decided to get drunk instead. Really, that bottle is pretty counterproductive w/r/t my education and my state of mind, but it does keep me from focussing on them too hard, and also encourages me to practice guitar more, so I guess it ends up a wash.

I was gonna write a bunch more, about fascinating topics like sex, self-perception, and sex, but then that drink I finished two paragraphs ago hit me, and now I need to watch cartoons.
